How to teach online & work remotely
Teaching English online offers great flexibility to those who wish to work remotely and travel fulltime. If you already have a teaching background, it is an advantage, but I believe almost anyone can do it! Patience and enthusiasm are the only real prerequisites for working in a job like this!
To teach English online or in a classroom, you will need to speak English as a first language and complete a TEFL course. I would highly rate the Waterford based company I used, if you are looking for a reliable and affordable option. Click the link below to find which course is best for you and use the code kayla15 to get yourself 15% off every course! (Keep in mind, most companies require AT LEAST a 120-hour certificate). https://tefl.ie/ref/201/
If you are certified and wondering about how to choose a company, I recommend looking at the website www.onlineenglishteaching.com to find one that will work for you! Here you can find details relating to many major online platforms. You can also compare what each company offers and see their requirements. With so many companies and such a high demand for classes at every level, there are endless opportunities and possibilities. (Top tip: pay attention to what they will demand of you in terms of minimum weekly hours as well as the time zone where your clients will be and make sure that this will work for you)
There is also a Facebook group called ‘Online English Teaching Jobs (OET Jobs)’, which is good for finding out which companies are actively recruiting at any given time. It’s also a great place to ask questions and get quick answers. With 83,000 members you are bound to have someone reply to your query almost instantly!
If you have followed the steps above or gotten a recommendation from a friend, it is always a good idea to get a third opinion! Make sure to do a general google search for reviews on whichever company you might have settled on. You should use this as a way of making sure that there are not too many overly negative reviews about the one you might be about to settle for! (Top tip no. 2: always triple check anything that you might be stuck with for a while! Most companies will provide a written contract, so make sure to look for this and take your time reading it before you put your name at the bottom!)
Finally, I will preface my last comment by saying that there is ‘no one-size-fits-all’ when it comes to choosing an online employer. You really need to choose the one that will best serve you in the long run. I do have some referral links below, so if you do feel inclined to go with any of these platforms, you might do me a small favour (that won’t cost you anything!) and click through to them from here:
